Look How They Have Grown!

The children were so excited to see how the brine shrimp have grown! We captured a brief video of the brine shrimp....look closely to see their amazing transformation! The students are learning that all living things grow and change.

Goldfish!

Our first grade scientists observed goldfish while learning about some new technologies.  Each small group observed and recorded information about their goldfish in their science notebooks.  They then used digital cameras, proscope digital  microscopes and flip cameras to record their fish.  Our "science talks" revolved around how fish move, their body parts and how they compare to other animals we have studied.
Check out the fist videos recorded by our first graders!

Crickets!

During the last few days we have observed crickets to learn more about living things.  We worked with partners to look closely at crickets that were placed in small magnifying boxes.  Here are some pictures of our first grade scientists at work!

We then took pictures of our crickets up close by using the proscope digital microscope.  We were able to capture a few good pictures that we then labeled using the mimio interactive board.

Brine Shrimp!!

Today when we looked at our "mystery" substances we saw things moving in Jar A. We determined that Jar A was the living thing. The first graders were so excited to look at their living things under the proscope microscope. Here are some pictures and video that the students took of our living brine shrimp!

Mystery Substances!!

Our first grade scientists have been very busy during these last few days!  We started our week with a science talk about "What is Alive?"  A science talk is a discussion where all views and ideas are accepted and respected.  Everyone gets a turn to share their thoughts and we work hard not to correct our peers.  After that we looked at two different "mystery" substances and compared them to rock salt.  The students were told that one of the "mystery" substances was a living thing.  They used magnifying glasses, the proscope digital microscopes and more to observe the two substances in order to make a prediction about which one was a living thing.  Below are pictures that the students took of our mystery substances and a few of our predictions.
